![]() ![]() The galvanizing moment of the film-as scripted by Jonathan Herman and Andrea Berloff-is when Dr. ![]() Dre as they face the opposition of its musically conservative owner. arousing his hardworking mother’s ire by spurning respectable day jobs, moves out to pursue his dreams against all odds Ice Cube, a high-school student filling notebooks with lyrics, performs at a local club with Dr. Dre (Corey Hawkins), and O’Shea Jackson, a.k.a Ice Cube (O’Shea Jackson, Jr.), are altogether more familiar. ![]() The primordial efforts of Andre Young, a.k.a. It’s never made clear whether he’s bluffing, but in this brief scene he appears instantly as a mastermind with a keen sense of self-preservation. He shows up at a house that’s used by another dealer and, when he’s threatened-both bodily and financially-he boldly and shrewdly ups the ante. Eazy-E (played in the film by Jason Mitchell), is involved with at the start of the action, in 1986. The opening deal involves drugs, which is the business that Eric Wright, a.k.a. Gary Gray’s generous, vigorous, exuberantly celebratory but subtly clear-eyed bio-pic about the rap group N.W.A.-its rise, its dissolution, its tributaries. The movie starts with a business deal and ends with a business deal, and there are lots of business deals in between, throughout the hundred and forty-seven minutes of “Straight Outta Compton,” the director F.
